Agronomy Manager - Lucknow District Co-operative Inc. - Lucknow, ON

PURPOSE AND SUMMARY STATEMENT

 

Under the direction of the General Manager, the Agronomy Manager will be responsible for the execution of all agronomy related operations, sales and marketing programs, in support of volume and profitability goals for Lucknow District Co-operative Inc.

 

 

SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP

 

Develops, supervises, and leads the Agronomy Sales and support staff to follow coordinated goals and objectives that will grow the business and develop profitable professional relationships with customers. Sales and support staff will report to Agronomy Manager.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Will work with staff to organize and mentor their work. Annual review with agronomy sales and support staff, provide leadership and guidance. Performance evaluation with annual goals set out to monitor.

 

Organizes training for staff to provide them with effective knowledge of products and usage.

 

Inventory forecast to prepare for in season needs, work with vendors for pricing opportunities. Count inventory periodically for end of season, year end. Responsible for margin and shrink activity. Participates in developing price lists, innovative sales programs, sales prospects and customer incentives to achieve or exceed sales budget, margin objectives and increase market share.

 

Forecast needs for upcoming months by pre ordering and move product to best meet customer and storage needs.

Communicates with other departments to coordinate the efforts of the company in order to continuously grow market share and improve profitability for the Co-operative.

 

Monitors, coordinates, and leads sales activities, product needs, and service requirements with the company and independent customers to ensure maximum sales opportunities, margins, efficiency, and synergy.

 

Provides leadership in achieving profit objectives and communicates plans and targets to all agronomy staff.

 

Oversees the introduction of new products, as well as communication plans, product training and marketing.

 

Uses Company Programs to identify progressive customers and to coordinate the sharing of these lists between agronomy, energy, feed and consumer staff.

 

Represents the agronomy Division at industry meetings and trade shows as required.

 

Ensures the credit worthiness of customers, quotes prices and credit terms, and prepares sales contracts for orders obtained.  Promotes the use of credit programs as a sales tool and helps provide the required information to establish credit.  Works closely with the credit department to keep aware of credit problems and COD customers.

 

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Adheres to all company policies, procedures and business ethics codes in all areas, eg. safety, credit, proper management of assets, pricing, uniforms, etc. and maintains the appropriate professional image.

 

Follows the Lucknow Co-operative Workplace Health, Safety & Environmental policies and procedures.  Under the Occupational Health and Safety act (OHSA) a supervisor must:  ensure that a worker complies with the Act and regulations; ensure that any equipment, protective device or clothing required by the employer is used or worn by the worker; advise a worker of any potential or actual health or safety dangers known by the supervisor; if prescribed, provide a worker with written instructions about the measures and procedures to be taken for the worker’s protection and take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of workers.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

Education & Experience

 

Normally requires a college diploma or university degree in agriculture, marketing, or other business related discipline and at least 5 years of sales/marketing experience to demonstrate the ability to generate profitable sales while supervising others.

 

            Functional Competencies

 

Understanding and experience with  agronomy-related areas including marketing and sales, branding, products, price strategy, competitive adeptness, negotiation, product proficiency, resources optimization, and policies and procedures along with marketing strategy, plans, program execution, budgeting, communications, and training.

 

Management leadership and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in order to build credibility, rapport, relationships, identify producer needs, make whole farm proposals, and demonstrate strong closing techniques.

 

Proven professional communication, persuasion, presentation, and customer service skills.

 

Demonstrated supervisory experience including hiring, orientation, coaching, counseling, performance evaluations, and training and development, etc. and the ability to get work done through others.

 

Proven ability to utilize organizational and multi-tasking skills to ensure maximum productivity and manage time more effectively.

 

Proven computer skills and the ability to use the computer to enhance business processes (e.g. Microsoft Office, Agvance).

            Other Requirements

 

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a clean driving abstract.

 

Ability to travel independently and overnight as necessary to complete the duties of the position.

 

Must be able to be trained in Lucknow Co-operative Workplace Health, Safety & Environmental policies and procedures, including Accident Reporting, Emergency Response Plan, Fire Safety, General Safety Rules, Health & Safety Rights, Health & Safety Roles and Responsibilities, Safe Manual Lifting, Slips Trips and Falls, and WHMIS.

 

May be required to be trained in the following: Transportation of Dangerous Goods, along with other  

 

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

Mental Effort

 

The incumbent works independently within established policies and work procedures and is called upon to make decisions within their scope of practice.

 

Requires periods of concentration that varies between moderate to occasionally high in intensity and attention to detail while establishing sales goals for the company, approving expenditures for work unit necessities, controlling expenses of department or operational area, maintenance and safe operation of equipment and assets related to the facilities, ensuring the location and equipment are maintained according to regular maintenance schedules and proper operating procedures, in a fast paced work environment. Works closely with General Manager on new capital or when high repair costs needed.

 

The incumbent may encounter moderate to occasionally high mental stress increases when dealing with deadlines, organizing and prioritizing work schedules of staff, during month and year-end activities during peak season, sometimes unclear information and in handling interruptions from supplier queries, other departments, managers and government agencies, directing, training and coaching staff that require refocusing.

 

Mental stress is often particularly high when assisting with budgeting, when participating with performance management or non-compliance concerns with staff, addressing operational issues and explore alternative solutions which may have significant impact on the department’s credibility, operations and services.

 

Physical Effort

 

Most of the incumbents time is spent either in a sitting position while working at a computer screen or periods of walking large areas when helping with plot demonstrations. Possible eye strain from use of a computer after daily usage.

 

Proper lifting, carrying and putting away parcels weighing up to 50 lbs may be required. Physical demands include occasional turning, bending, pulling and reaching throughout the shift to accomplish tasks. This position also requires frequent driving to various locations.

 

Working Conditions

 

Work is completed both in a typical office environment and outdoors at various customer locations. It is expected that the incumbent will spend approximately 20% of the time on the road and with customers. Travelling may include driving on gravel roads for extended periods, driving in occasional storm-like conditions; as well some overnight stays may be required. Additional hours or time outside of normal hours may be necessary due to operational requirements.

 

Incumbent may on rare occasions be exposed to varied surfaces, varied lighting, and exposure to fuel, dust and fumes, when helping with general job operations.
