Controller - Topflight Grain Cooperative - Monticello, IL

LOCATION: Monticello, IL



Directs the financial affairs of the organization and prepares financial analyses of operations. The Controller is responsible for the company's financial plans and policies, accounting practices, relationships with lending institutions and financial community, maintenance of fiscal records, and preparation of financial reports. The position involves supervision over daily financial activities, accounting, budgetary controls, and various governmental reporting.



  • Responsible for the design, implementation and oversight of accounting processes and procedures for the cooperative.
  • Responsible for the preparation of all cooperative financial statements and supporting schedules. 
  • Responsible for maintaining membership and equity records that properly reflect individual member’s equity in the cooperative.
  • Coordinate with external auditors to facilitate fieldwork and year-end financial statement preparation.
  • Comply with state and federal government reporting and tax filings.
  • Coordinates all Information Technology maintenance, upgrades, and additions of hardware and software.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and promotes safety amongst customers and employees.




  • Responsible for payroll processing through ADP, participate in maintaining employee benefit packages.
  • Responsible for the daily banking activities, establishing lines of credit securing and investing funds as required or directed by management.
  • Responsible for maintaining grain accounting system (AGRIS) to accurately reflect all the financial transactions of the cooperative.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement cost saving and process improvement strategies consistent with the objectives and goals of the cooperative.
  • Prepare reports for General Manager as required or directed for inventory, position, income/expense analysis, special projects, working capital.
  • Assist in analyzing merger/acquisition opportunities and capital investment.
  • Maintain depreciation schedules with Thomsen Reuter’s Fixed Asset CS
  • Perform analysis and ad hoc reporting for insurance (worker’s compensation and property), employee benefits, income projections, and future cash requirements for operating line of credit, and multiple other areas on an as needed basis.
  • Track project costs to ensure adherence of contract terms and amounts.
  • Assist Illinois Department of Agriculture in annual warehouse exam for adequate working capital and compliance of state regulations.
  • Attend and participate in company programs/meetings and educational events.
  • Complete Borrowing Base Report (BBR) and financial certification document, submit monthly to banking institution.





  • Working knowledge of the agriculture industry preferred.
  • A strong understanding of cost accounting, grain accounting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) related to the commodity business.





  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or economics.
  • 5+ years accounting experience in agribusiness industry preferred.
