Director of Grain Procurement - SEMO Milling - Scott City, MO


LOCATION: Scott City, MO

SUPERVISOR: Dan Fetherston

  1. Position Purpose

Reporting to the General Manager, this individual is responsible for development and execution of our grain origination strategy in a manner that best guarantees competitive grain costs, superior grain quality, and adequate grain stocks to operate the mill without interruption As a member of the Executive Team this individual will help develop and execute overall company strategy for maximum return for the shareholders.

They will coordinate with SEMO Milling Logistics daily to ensure efficient operations and maximize logistical opportunity. Furthermore, they will be responsible for managing the futures and spread position for SEMO Milling.


  1. Position Responsibilities and Duties

Performing duties to ensure the following responsibilities are managed accurately and timely:


  • Develop and execute grain origination strategies to ensure competitive grain cost, grain quality, and grain availability
  • Execute and maintain a risk management strategy that protects the company financial position and adheres to the Risk Management Policy
  • Work with Mill Operations to monitor grain quality and develop goals and procedures to maximize yield
  • Direct operations at the Poplar Bluff and Sikeston grain facilities


  • Ensure the timely delivery of grain as required by the mill that meets established milling standards
  • Educate producers regarding storage and harvesting practices to maintain grain quality
  • Develop and organize customer appreciation events throughout the year
  • Direct and execute any and all origination agreements for any and all commodities.
  • Evaluate our grain position daily to determine if we are properly positioned to limit risk
  • Monitor incoming grain shipments to ensure quality and timeliness of deliveries
  • Interact with Mill Operations to coordinate deliveries of grain
  • Provide daily directions for grain employees at the Scott City location
  • Set up return hauls for SEMO Milling Logistics to maximize truck utilization

General Management and Leadership

  • Ensure all regulatory compliance.
  • Follow established Human Resources procedures.
  • Ensure proper staffing, training, and adherence to area SOP’s.
  • Evaluate the performance of subordinates.
  • Create a team working environment.
  • Develop key indicators to measure quality and productivity.
  • Utilize the Integrated Management System.
  • Administer Coaching and Counseling where needed.
  • Ensure that ongoing continuous improvement is achieved.
  • Foster good working relationships with other department managers and supervisors.


Open Communications to be a team-player and do other tasks as necessary.


  1. Essential Skills

This position actively engages in phone and face-to-face communication with the farm community and is engaged in cross-functional management teams to develop and support policies and procedures in accordance with the company Vision, Vales and Strategic Objectives. Proven experience with food grade milling management is critical to this position. In addition, good oral and written communication skills, computer literacy, strong leadership skills, organizational skills, and the ability to effectively work with and direct a team environment are critical. This position requires computer literacy, exceptional leadership skill, superior origination of oneself and subordinates.

Education Level:                     BS in Agribusiness or Crop Sciences or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Related Experience:                5 years Agricultural sales experience

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

Broad and deep knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures to handle

complex tasks and give experienced guidance to others

This position requires physical and mental alertness, attentiveness and stamina for the length of an entire work shift each
