Under the direction of the Tax Manager, supervises the preparation of motor fuel tax, sales tax, and environmental tax filings and payments related to the business operations of GROWMARK and its subsidiary companies. Maintains control systems to insure that all filings and payments are accurate, timely, and reflect the proper amounts payable to the taxing authority. 



Supervises, leads, and develops the Sr. Tax Compliance Coordinator, Tax Compliance Coordinator and the Tax Compliance Specialist.



Oversees the preparation of motor fuel, environmental, and sales tax returns and tax payments for GROWMARK and subsidiary companies related to foreign and domestic operations. 


Analyze and determine proper tax configuration of SAP and external tax software products and maintain profiles and scenarios that drive tax billing calculations for all products and troubleshoot errors. 


Builds knowledge of SAP and external tax software functionality and data to identify the causes of problems, and evaluate related tax and accounting results.  Investigates and updates changes to configuration, master data, profiles, and scenarios to reflect business and tax law changes.  Supports testing of system or process changes to ensure effective implementation.


Reviews tax department return preparation and reconciliation processes to optimize performance, making recommendations for and supporting process reengineering efforts, including the utilization of data analytics tools.  Suggests and implements needed updates or modifications to electronic filing and control systems.


Maintains technical competency in motor fuel, excise, sales, environmental, and other tax related subjects.  Maintain technical competency in ERP system processes where taxes are relevant as well as other third party tax software.


Provides guidance to product areas to ensure correct billing and recording of taxes. Directs the reconciliation of all financial accounts for all motor fuel, environmental, and sales taxes.


Functions as a liaison between the tax department, divisions, members/customers, GROWMARK IT, and other GROWMARK departments regarding tax compliance.


Responds to information requests, office audits and field audits by taxing authorities related to motor fuel, environmental, and sales tax returns.



Maintains professional relationships with taxing authorities.


Responds to tax information requests from GROWMARK employees, subsidiary employees, vendors, and member cooperatives.


Responsible for developing skill levels and expanding the use of SAP and query software by others.


Follows GROWMARK’s Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance Program, Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA and DOT policies and procedures, as they apply.


Performs all other duties as assigned.



Normally requires a college degree in accounting, finance, or business administration, or equivalent experience and at least 2-4 years of related experience to demonstrate the ability to provide tax processing and compliance leadership to others.


Understanding of tax regulations for motor fuel, environmental, and sales taxes and having the ability to apply tax knowledge to the transactions to determine appropriate taxability.


Understanding and experience with tax and accounting-related areas including internal controls, business operation and process analysis, billing system controls and analysis, tax compliance, master data structure, accounting information systems, policies and procedures, risk, business ethics, and compliance.


Proven professional communication, interpersonal, persuasion, and customer service skills.

Demonstrated planning, organization, and problem-solving skills.


Proven team building skills and the ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.


Proven computer skills including spreadsheet, database, data analytics, and query tools, the ability to understand the capabilities of third-party accounting and information systems, and the ability to use the computer to enhance business processes, facilitate analysis, and foster effective business decisions.


Demonstrates essential abilities including business knowledge, collaboration, communication, customer focus, decision making and skill development.


Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to travel independently and overnight if necessary.


Ability to occasionally work hours above those considered normal to meet tax deadlines.


Ability and willingness to participate in required training that may include education on GROWMARK’s policies and procedures and additional training as it relates to the requirements of the position.
